AOL and IMAP

I have successfully created an IMAP connection for a user in Outlook. The
AOL messages/folders are all downloading/uploading properly.

Here's my problem. Email messages with a couple of users in the To: field
are being sent properly. I attempted to send an email to 12 addressees
through the account. The message showed up properly in the sent items folder
and is not stuck in the Outlbox (no error messages occurred). However, no
recipients received the message. I was able to log onto AOL directly and
send the same 12 addresses from within its proprietary mailbox. And yes, the
names in Outlook are separated by a semicolon (in AOL, the separator is a
comma).

Has anyone heard of this before, and if so, is there a work-around other
than purchasing a third-party app. to turn IMAP into POP3? The theory is
that AOL might consider the message to be a worm attempt and disallows it.
However, again, no security or error messages arise.

Have you configured your outgoing port properly? Try/check this:

In the Outgoing mail (SMTP): box, type 587, then click the Apply button.

Let us know if this works.

I have no problems yet but I am using Outlook Express.

Yes, the ports are configured in accordance with all of the instructions:

imap.aol.com (port 143)
smtp.aol.com (port 587)

Emails send just fine unless there are too many recipients. I haven't
tested it beyond that it sends two recipients successfully and 12 recipients
unsuccessfully. I know the recipient's addresses are correct, as it sent
fine without rejection from within AOL itself.

When a message gets moved to the Sent Items folder, that's a fairly
conclusive sign that the mail server has accepted the outgoing message. The
problem appears to be an AOL server problem, but you can enable diagnostic
logging to make sure.

Thanks, Brian. The log for a successful send looks identical to an
"unsuccessful" send to multiple recipients.

So, I guess that verifies the AOL server situation.

Thanks for your idea. Now I have to figure out what to do about it.

You should be able to use the log file, which shows the complete SMTP
session between the client and the server, to beat the tech support people
over the head, since it proves it's their problem. If they won't take it
on, ask to speak to their supervisor. Escalate it as far up the chain as
you need to obtain satisfaction.
