appcrash word 2003

HelpMe

Ok I've been through the FAQs on word.mvps.org and I'm still having problems.
When I delete my normal.dot template, Word starts up perfectly and recreates
the template. But after this, when I try to restart Word again (close then
open again), I have the same problem all over again. It's an appcrash and I
can run in safe mode. I've checked and I do not have any addins or plugins of
any sort. I'm running Word 2003 in Vista... and this problem only happens
under my user profile.. not other users. Did not have this problem a month ago

User profiles can be bitches to diagnose and usually I recommend deleting
the profile and create a new one from scratch as it can sap hours of your
productivity time.

This has also happened to me today. Yesterday Word was fine. The program
opens and lets me scroll or tab but when I try to type it say's program is
closing.

That may be a symptom of a Word Data Key corruption - usually because Word
has been running when updates are installed.

Run Regedit and expand by double-clicking to the key below. With DATA
selected, press DELETE. Word will automatically recreate a new key when it
is restarted.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data

Symptoms of Data Key corruption may include:

• The mouse does not work when you use Word.
• You cannot open a Word document from the Search window in Windows
Vista.
• You cannot open a Word document from Windows Desktop Search.
• Word crashes when you try to start or exit Word.
• Word crashes when you open the Open dialog box.
• Word crashes when you save a document.
• Word crashes when you close a document.

If you feel uncomfortable editing the registry yourself, Microsoft have a
download that will do this for you. See MSKB 940791
