Any info on the use of, need for, formatting of, and placement of
appendices? The MS-Word books seem to be universally silent on this one.

All of the subjects you mention are the purview of a style manual, not Word
documentation, but if you have decided that you need appendixes, how to
format them, and where to place them, you may want to look at
