Apple Security Update 2005-008 & Entourage Conflicts

Microsoft Please Help!!! As widely reported in several newsgroups,
Apple's latest security update tampers with certain functions of
several sotware products, including Entourage. In Entourage it
eliminates the color coding and tracking in the Project Center. The
project center is used by professional users, by companies - it's not a
toy for end-users, this is really serious. Microsoft must create and
post a fix to this problem.

Microsoft is taking this seriously. We are working closely with Apple to
resolve this issue.

Thanks,

We're having the same problem here. Recurring event icons and the
project "bullets" are missing as well. It's quite inconvenient.

For my company it is more then just inconvenient. we have adapted
office's project center as the main tool to track and manage all of our
projects across multiple work groups. In addition 2005-008 also tampers
with the display of certein functions in FileMaker Pro, another
software we rely on. This is a disaster for a business. Luckily, only
the MACs where affected. the solution: we did clean installations of
OSX, reinstalled all softwre and updated - EXCEPT FOR 2005-008 - now we
are back in businesss. It took a whole day and therefore costs quiet a
penny in resources.....But Microsoft and Apple have still not posted a
fix....and we do more with our MACs then copy iTune songs...so we were
on our own.

Not sure what you expect of Microsoft? - You want them to post a fix for an
apple update that affected Filemaker?

Not sure of the extent to which Filemaker is affected, but the effects in
Entourage are limited to simple display anomalies - the project 'dots' are
not displayed, the alarm 'bell' symbol does not show in the calendar views.
There is no change in functionality. This is hardly what I would describe as
a 'disaster' for anyone. Undesirable, certainly., maybe a little
inconvenient, but a 'disaster'???

As with any software update, your resources may have been better spent on
testing an update before going into full deployment, but that your call :)

Anyway, apple are aware of the issue, and I am sure a fix will come out at
some point, but when and where and how, I have no idea.

Hi Barry,

There is also the problem of Entourage crashing when one tries to print out
a weekly calendar (a big problem for me). I don't know if was the Apple
upgrade or the MS Office upgrade that did this, but it's a problem in any
case.

I think the issues caused by the two upgrades might be getting conflated as
they happened at about the same time.

The weekly calendar print crash is introduced with the SP2 update. However,
there is a likely work-round (apart form printing in month or list view,
both of which should work OK)

You will probably find you are only crashing when you print a week with an
event that spans one of the week boundaries - i.e. It start before the
beginning of the week, or ends after the end of the week. Try to break any
such events into 2, starting the new events 1 minute after midnight at the
start of the week, and stopping one minute before midnight at the end of the
week. If they are all day events, break them at the week boundary.

Please report back on whether or not this resolves the crash.

If it does, it will be a pain to do this for all affected weeks, but
hopefully a patch won't take too long to put out - MS are normally pretty
good at fixing crashing bugs.

Hi Barry,

Sorry, no joy. I modified the calendar as you suggest and the thing still
crashes on print. Happy to email you a screen shot if you'd like but the
work-around will not work.

Great. Thanks for the feedback, I'll pass it back to the people who need to
know. If I find out anything new, I will get in touch. Sorry it didn't work
for you :(

Screen shot and a copy of the Microsoft Error Reporting log would be helpful
to be sure we're not facing multiple problems with the same symptom.

Hi Nathan,

Rebecca Harriss just asked me for this and I sent it to her directly.

I've really got to thank you folks. This is top quality tech support. You
responded immediately and are obviously at work on the problem. This is a
very different experience than I've had with Microsoft tech support on the
Windows side of the world.

I've been having the same problem! I finally just had to go to a
Franklin Covey paper organizer. Sure hope Apple/MS get this fixed by
the next time I need to fill it. Seemed to happen after the MS
upgrade...I think.
