How can I have Word auto-replace words and abbreviations in a selection of
text I have cut-and-pasted from another source?

You can't. The AutoCorrect feature is triggered by typing a recognized item on
the keyboard. It doesn't scan pasted material at all.

The closest you can come is to (manually) go to the end of each word or
abbreviation that needs to be replaced, and type a space and then backspace. The
space will trigger the AutoCorrect, but then you need to delete the extra space.

Unless the "correction" is actually an AutoFormat, in which case you can use
Format | AutoFormat | AutoFormat Now to apply the changes.

But AutoFormat makes changes like "straight quotes" to "smart quotes",
fractions, and URLs. I don't see anything there that could change "words and
abbreviations" as requested by the OP.

I'm sure you're right on this one, but others reading it might be thinking
of changes such as 1/4 to ¼ as an "AutoCorrect" action.

Thanks guys. Seems like something Microsoft should write in, and "Apply
Auto-Replace Now" function, or something. I ended up just writing a macro.
