Apply (re-apply) a template to multiple documents. How to?

Help! I have several hundred documents based on a template. I want to
be able to change all of the documents at once by applying a different
template to all of them in some sort of "bulk" process, perhaps by
running a script.

Does anyone know how to do this? I am a programmer (Java), so
writing/modifiying a script is possible, if I have an idea of how to
go about it. But I have no experience with programming MS Word.

Any help or pointers would be appreciated.
