Applying a template in Word 2007 and Vista

I have just upgraded to Office 2007 and MS Vista. I need to reformat a number
of other documents (papers submitted to a conference) in a unified way, and
then combine into one document. I do have template created in an older
version of Office, but am unsure how to a) open a template not in the
'templates' folder (which I have only just found), or b) apply the template
to an exisiting document, such that it updates the formatting (things like
heading styles, page formatting, text formatting, etc).
