applying heading styles - what's the extra character?

A

anon k

When I press shift-alt-right or shift-alt-left to apply heading styles,
Word inserts an extra character when I release the shift key. The extra
character is either a spade or a diamond, with font set as TimesNewRoman.

I can get rid of it with a stroke of ctrl-z, but of course it shouldn't
appear to begin with.

What is it, and how do I stop it from appearing?

OK, I give up.

What is it, and how DO you stop it from appearing?

:)

Sorry, I can't duplicate that but thanks for pointing out the neat keyboard
shortcut keys!
