Applying Styles Quickly?

Is there a way to instantly view changes you make to a style in word
2003 (sp2)?

As it is, I go to "styles and formatting", click on the style I want
to modify, then select "Modify".
This displays the "Modify Style" dialog box

I then click the "Format" button and choose the type of mods from the
list, for example - Paragraph, or Numbering.

Each mod type, once clicked, brings up another dialog where you
further refine your style.

Now, this is what bothers me: In order to see how my modifications
affect the style, I have to close out of the mod type dialog, then the
"Modify Style" dialog. Every time I want to change a style just a
little bit to get the look I want, I have to go through that whole
process over again.

I know that I can make individual changes to a style by just going to
the "Format" on the menu bar and then "update the style to reflect
changes", but that's kind of cumbersome. Ideally, for every
modification type under "Modify Style", there'd be an "Apply" button.
So I can see the changes without exiting all the menus. Obviously this
doesn't exist, so if anyone knows the best way to accomplish what I'm
trying to do, I'd really appreciate hearing from you. Thanks!
