Applying updates to Office XP

I'm trying to apply updates for Office XP which I have
downloaded from the Microsoft website. Installation is
failing with a message 'the expected version of the
product was not found on your system'. Of course, a legal
and licensed copy of Office XP is resident on my system.

Does anyone know how to overcome this?
