archive data files open in Office 12

How can I prevent the Archive data files from being opened each time I open
Office 12 beta's Outlook, even though they're not used. This is a nuisance
when doing daily backups, since the Archive data files are shown as changed
(new date) even though no archive should have run. I don't see the files in
the folder tree.

In Outlook 2003, the Archive data files were only opened when the archive
process runs. Thereafter, they could be closed (from the folder tree) and
wouldn't change until the next archive run.

Why don't you just close it?
It's still right there if you use Folder list view.

In Outlook 2003, you can see it. I'm using Outlook 12 beta - you don't see
the Archive data files in the list, yet they are opened each time Outlook is
opened.

Scroll up and down in the list. If the folder is opened, it definitely
appears in the list in 2007.

Wrong. It's no different in Outlook 2007.

Thanks Sue.

I've cleared the "Show archive folder" check box and accepted the change -
only the loaded mailed folders show, no archive folders.
I checked the "Show archive folder" option and accepted the change - still
only the loaded mailed folder show, no archive folders.

The problem seems to be misunderstood.

The issue is as follows: the archive folder dates change when Outlook 2007
opens, even if they aren't loaded in Outlook as a data file and even if the
archive isn't started. The date-time stamp on the Archive destination files
is set to the date-time when Outlook is opened, not the time when Outlook is
closed as is the case with the other mail files.
They seem to be read and written to at start up and closed again.

Thus, if doing a backup, the archive files are seen to be changed and thus
"different" even though nothing has been done to them. They are then backed
up unecessarily.

The difference is when 2003 opened, the archive folders weren't touched, so
the dates remained the same UNTIL they were opened (as one of the mail files)
or if opened by starting the archive.

Again, these archive mail files are not in the list of data files.
The archive files are only listed as the "Default archive folder"
destination and as archive files for specified folders in the loaded mail
files.

Brian

Ah, you didn't mean opened, at least not in the literal sense of display, you meant accessed.

AFAIK, there's no way to change the built-in behavior.
