Archive Old Projects

Hello

We have been using PS2003 since 2006 and have accumulated a lot of
projects in the process. I have followed the article from MS Experts
on archiving our closed projects but all those projects are still
sitting on our server/database and it's getting massive and our OLAP
cube is taking forever to build. I have changed the date range for
the cube build but it still takes a very long time.

Is there a procedure on how to archive really old projects somewhere
else?... perhaps another server. I'm not sure if that is the solution
but I would really appreciate your help.

Thank you
Rosa

Just doing some brainstorming here but, should you have an old server, you
may want to copy your current environment to the server and then delete the
very old once out of your current proejct server environmnet. This will allow
you to still access your very old projects and should take some load of your
current server.

2007 handles archiving of proejcts much better, you actually have an
archieve DB. Maybe you want to think about updating.
Hope this helps

The limitation of the archive procedure we developed is that all data
remains in your original Project Server 2003 database. As you now know, the
database can grow to a massive size as a result. To archive the completed
projects to another database, you might consider purchasing the Physical
Archive Tool at:

Please note that I have not used this tool personally. Hope this helps.

Thank you Dale and Marc for your input. We are looking at upgrading
to 2007 but not until 4th quarter ... I think we need to clarify and
finetune our processes a bit better and clean up what we already have
which should make the migration a lot smoother :) The archive tool
looks interesting so I'll look into it.

thanks again

Hello Marc,

Regarding project server 2007 archiving. Althought PS 2007 archives the
project plans and all related information, it does not archive the
information stored in the Project Workspaces. How would you include the
project workspace in the archival process. The workspaces are important to
us, we are presently only archiving the project plan information (Using the
method you mentioned). I would really like to hear your thoughts on how to
make the archiving process complete.

Thanks
Dave
