archiving items older than certian date

Outlook 2000 (9.0.02711) no service packs, running on windows 2000 sp4,
connecting to exchange 2000 sp3 mailbox (mapi). Offline folders are in use
on the mailbox but not on the machine I attempted the archival from. I am
using an admin machine and opening the users mailbox from there to perform
the archive. The actual user's machine is using offline folders for his
mailbox.

I ran an archive (file -> archive -> archive this folder and all subfolders
(selected at top of mailbox), archive items older than: 1/1/2003, Include
items with "do not autoarchive checked" was checked) and it did not work?
After running this archive I did an advanced search on the mailbox for items
recieved on or before 12/31/2002 expecting to get 0 results but instead
found over 1500 items that should have been archived but were not? I
compared the archive file and the actual mailbox and could not see any
pattern indicating what went wrong. I did not see duplicates between the
two, it didn't look like is stopped at a certian date, etc... there was NO
error recieved during the archive.

any ideas what happened? or how to find out?

The archive process does not use the received date. It uses the modified
date, which is usually not displayed.

oh. Thanks. How would I go about archiving all items 'recieved' before a
certian date then? Only thing that comes to mind is to use the export
feature, which allows that criteria, then take the second step of manually
deleting those items. I guess that would work. Is there a better way though?

thanks for the reply Brian. I'm a little unclear on the response though.

1) What do you mean by 'move them to another pst'? There are several layers
of subfolders that I would need to maintain. So as far as I know, in order
to get the list of all items recieved before a certian date I would need to
use the advanced find dialog. The results from that if moved in whole would
all go to whereever I move them, without the folder structure, right?

2) What is the reason for staying away from export for this?

Exactly that. You said the archive didn't do what you wanted. So, I
suggested moving by hand.

There are several

I don't know, never having tried it. So, copy them instead of moving them
and see what type of folder structure you get. You can always undo it if
you don't like it and if you do you can then go back and delete the items
you copied.
