archiving old email

I send and receive a large quantity of email related to my work and I often
send and receive large attachments. My email message database has grown
to 2 gigabytes in 8 months. Now, as at other times in the past, outlook has
stoped working and I need to move the messages and database file and let
outlook start a new one. But then I'm left without being able to refer to old
email. Doesn't outlook or entourage allow you to archive portions of past
email say from 2 months ago back to the beginning. I tried deleting old
messages but it didn't change the size of the messages file. My computer
actually says it can't send email now because the volume is full. There is
plenty of room on the harddrive so I assume it is the outlook messages file
that is maxed. One time somebody suggested saving email one at a time,
but I have too many to do that.
Thanks,
J

If you can open Outlook, go to tools->options->other>advanced and set up
your archiving. To be able to send mail again, try compacting your
Outlook.pst file. Right click on Outlook Today, select Properties, then
Advanced. Compacting 3x seems to give the best results.

If you cannot open Outlook, try this to reduce its size:

You might also want to consider upgrading to Outlook 2003 and use the new
unicode format for the .pst file which allows a practical limit of 20 gigs
rather than 2.

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. Due to
the (insert latest virus name here) virus, all mail sent to my personal
account will be deleted without reading.
