archiving - Outlook 2007 - what date is used?

file -> archive...

you select the folder(s) you want to archive, then below that it says:
"archive items older than:" 'date'

'date' being selected from a standard calander control.

what 'date' are you specifying here? in other words, what date property is
used for making decision on archival here? actual email received date? last
date the email was viewed (accessed)? etc...

It's the Modified Date - one reason for not importing pst data.....

thanks Gordon. One follow-up question.

what user actions change the Modified Date of an email item?

I'm not sure exactly what the Modified Date is for an email item. In
thinking of a database record, it is common for a field to be used for
tracking the last 'modified date' of the record, where 'modified' typically
means changing any other field of that record. Is it this same premise? for
example, would a user simply opening an email change perhaps a
'lastViewedDate' field and thus the 'Modified Date'? Or maybe moving the
email item from one folder to another changing a 'location' field and thus
the 'Modified Date'?

any further input would be appreciated.

also, I'm assuming from your comment that importing data from a pst file
would give the items in it a new modified date equal to the date of import?

Copying, editing, and importing . Don't know about any others...

Didn't do so on my version of 2007 - I added the Modified date column to my
view and opened an email. The modified date didn't change after I'd closed
it...the other operations I listed DID change the date...

interesting - works every time on mine. Outlook 2000 through 2007. Must be a configuration thing or add-ins. I use a LOT.

outlook 2003 behaved as follows for me:

no = did not change modified date
yes = changed modified date

opening: no
changing read/unread status: no
replying: yes
forwarding: yes
moving: yes
copying: yes (new copy has new modified date, original is unchanged)
assigning category: yes

1. obviously not a complete list but those are the things I tried when
playing around with this
2. I did not browse through any options to see what settings may effect
this, but obviously such settings may exist
