Archiving projects – Issue with article from ProjectExpert website

Hi guys,

Has anybody experience any issues when setting Archive by following this
article from ProjectExperts site.

http://www.projectserverexperts.com/Shared Documents/ArchiveCompletedProjects.htm

This article has been recommended many times in this forum.

I followed the instruction and set up an Archive about 14 months ago. It
works exactly as suggested. I found the solution very neat.

Except few weeks ago all project managers in my team lost access to their
project plans. Few of them could open each other plans but none of them could
open plans that they owned. Some project managers couldn’t open any project
plans.

I logged a support call and the boys from Microsoft pin it down to the
permissions in My Complete Project category (Archive). It did solve the
problem but now project managers can open archived plans. Why didn’t we have
this issue before? And how come the issue varied between project managers?

I am not entirely sure that the Archiving was really the problem.

Many thanks for any suggestions.

I can assure you that the My Complete Projects (Archive) category was not
the source of your problem. I strongly suspect that one of your Project
Server administrators made a change to the Project Server permissions,
either via a Group or Category, and then this messed up everything else.
Getting anyone to confess to this is probably impossible. But I can assure
you that in spite of what Microsoft Support said, the custom Category was
NOT the source of the problem. Hope this helps.

Hi Dale,

Many thanks for you reassurance.

I though the Microsoft Support explanation was a bit flimsy. If the
archiving really caused the issues we would had seen the problem 14 months
ago when I set it up.

Support sent me this article to set up Archive:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;920327

I found this technique far too complicated and some of the points are not
very clearly explained.

Also, thank your for confirming my suspicion that this issue is most likely
caused by permissions. You right, the other two Administrators swear they
didn’t change anything.

I will try to fix the problem myself by checking all the permissions.

Best Regards
