Are DL entries in Contacts queried against AD each time the DL is

I have a user who users a DL and would like to check Free/Busy information
prior to the message being sent. The user has populated the DL with AD
entries - Are the entries in the DL queried against AD each and every time
the DL is used?? I ask because the Free/Busy information is not being shown
unless the user uses the GAL.
