Are office professional 2007 files backward compatible?

I am currently enrolled at a college that uses Office 2003 they are possibly
going to convert to Office 2007 in the fall of this year or spring of 2008.
I need to buy either Office 2003 or 2007. My concern is that if I buy Office
2007 will m;y work that I do at home be compatible with the office 2003
format at school?
