Are other instances of Word running?

Hello Dave,

According to the description, my understanding of the question is: how to
detect if Office Word/Excel is already running before creating the
Application object.

The most commonly used ways to detect if Word/Excel is already running are:
1. Call GetObject("Word.Application") to see if it throws any exception.
In C#, we can put Marshal.GetActiveObject("Word.Application"); inside a
try-catch. If the call throws an exception like 'Operation unavailable
(Exception from HRESULT: 0x800401E3 (MK_E_UNAVAILABLE))', it indicates that
the Office application is not running at the moment.

2. Enumerate the processes (Process.GetProcesses();) and see if the
winword.exe or excel.exe is in the list.

If you have any other questions or concerns, please feel free to let me
know.

Note: The MSDN Managed Newsgroup support offering is for non-urgent issues
where an initial response from the community or a Microsoft Support
Engineer within 1 business day is acceptable. Please note that each follow
up response may take approximately 2 business days as the support
professional working with you may need further investigation to reach the
most efficient resolution. The offering is not appropriate for situations
that require urgent, real-time or phone-based interactions or complex
project analysis and dump analysis issues. Issues of this nature are best
handled working with a dedicated Microsoft Support Engineer by contacting
