Are Word X docs backward Compatible?

Marc Harmon

I am presently saving documents with Word X (service release 1) on OS 10.2.6
and may have to take the CD of documents to a Mac running system 9 and
Office 2001. With most applications, files are not backward compatible.
But the save feature in Word X would suggest that after Word 5.1, all else
saves as a Microsoft Word Document. Can anyone tell me for sure if a
document saved with Word X will open in Word bundled with Office 2001 for a
Mac running OS 9?

Thank You

Yes, well almost. All Mac Word documents form Word 98, 2001 and X, and all
Word Windows documents from Word 97, 2000, 2002 an 2003 are all the same
format. Word 6/95 are not identical, but even there I think they can open
the later files, maybe missing some newer features added in 98.

There will be no problem at all opening your Word X documents in Word 2001
and 98.

Office 2001 definitely. Office 98 certainly. Anything earlier, NO.

To have the document readable in versions earlier than Word 98 you need to
save as an earlier version from Word X.

Don't do this unless you have to, the older format cannot describe the
features of a modern document so you will lose some formatting.

Hope this helps
