Arranging images on page

I like typing notes for my college classes in MS Word for Mac, using the cool notebook layout mode. I'm not a MS Word expert so I need some help with arranging images/pictures. I want to be able to position images anywhere on the page (click and drag it freely). By default, you aren't able to do this, only arrange it to either side or centered. Is there an option to allow images to be dragged anywhere on the page layout? I also wanted to know how a picture with a solid color background (like white) could be formatted so only the picture (colored) would be present, and not the background. (with only the actual contours of the image obstructing the page layout).

Click on the picture, go to the FORMAT menu, and click PICTURE. On the left
hand side of the dialogue box click LAYOUT. If you choose the TIGHT setting,
that will enable you to drag your graphic around anywhere on the page.

Although Bruce's suggestion is accurate "Tight" is not the only choice that
permits free positioning. In fact, any of the Text Wrapping options change
the image from In Line with Text to a "floating" object. Each wrapping
option imparts different behaviors which determine how adjacent text flows.

Keep in mind that all objects in a Word document are "attached" to the text
in one of 2 ways: In Line [treated as a character in the paragraph] or
floating [but still anchored to the beginning of a paragraph]. Also, the
position of floating objects can be very difficult to maintain.

You might have a look at the following article plus the links at the bottom
of it that pertain to floating objects & the "Draw" layer:

Almost forgot the other question :)

To knock out the peripheral white pixels of most types of image use the
Transparent Color tool in the Picture group of the Formatting Palette.
