Arrow Keys enter cell edit mode

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

I am using the arrow keys to navigate around a excel spreadsheet but quite randomly the arrow keys then enter the cell edit mode (as if i pressed ctrl+u) and you need to press escape to exit this mode. very frustrating, any help?
