ASCII Character Codes - any suggestions?

I have a set of character codes which I used to use to key in various
characters such as vowels with various accents over them. However,
since changing to Windows XP I notice that some of them don't work. For
example, I used to do a capital O with a circumflex (chinese hat!) on it
by keying in 226, but that now produces a strange sign. Have the codes
been amended? Is my computer faulty? Am I doing something wrong? Or
can anyone suggest anything?

-Symbols
to see a chart of insertable symbols

Windows no longer supports the Alt+xxx ASCII format, but you can still use
Alt+0xxx (for example, Alt+0226), using the numbers on the numeric keypad.

Try the character map. You might find what you are looking for.

Check Word Help for International Characters. For
instance, Ctrl + Shift + ^ (nothing will happen), followed
by Shift + O should produce the desired result - Ô (as
will Alt + 0212, I think). Too bad about the ASCII
character set, as Suzanne reported. I hope the new system
is not too much more complex. The ASCII character set was
one of the last systems that could work anywhere.

taking the trouble to answer my question. Sorry my thanks have been
slow coming - I only dial up the newsgroup once a day, and sometimes not
at all. I'm afraid the wonderful world of Broadband has yet to hit
these parts!
