ASCII working/not working

Is there a setting that determines if Word will accept ASCII characters? A
user of mine tried to enter an e-accent-acute by using ALT+0233. This setting
doesn't work on his home or work PC but it does work on mine. I tried it on
his, and I tried using the unicode with ALT+X and that doesn't work either.
It's almost like his Word is not enabled to accept ASCII or Unicode
characters. (He can enter the symbol if he uses Insert, Symbol or if he does
CTRL+' E.

Can anyone help?

Does your user have NumLock turned on?

We used the number keys at the top of the keyboard.

The Alt+number thing doesn't work with the number keys at the top of the
keyboard. Use the numeric keypad.
