Asking again - Office Professional 2000 invalid CD key (on re-inst

B

bbrafman

I am asking again because I am really stuck! Please note that this is a
reinstall of O2K, and the key worked fine last time...

Re-installed XP Home from OEM recovery disk (fresh start!)
Then, in order:
NAV 2007
Wireless adapter utility
Ad Aware
Spybot
Windows Defender

Then when I attempt to re-install O2K, I get the "invalid CD key" error.
After retries, and web search, I find
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/842566

Following these instructions installs the suite, but when I run any of the
programs (i.e, Word), I get the CD key dialog box, and guess what? I get the
same "invalid CD key" error!

I'm stuck!

Thanks in advance for any help!

well i think the first
mistake is to load
all the third party
programs.

my suggestion is
to do it this way:

1) resinstall your oem
recovery disk and nothing
more. I mean nothing more,
nada..! No NAV, No WIRELESS
whatever...., etc.

2) update windows and your
machines drivers from microsoft
and your pc makers website.

donwload and update nothing
more, nada, period.

do not visit any other sites outside
of microsoft, your isp homepage
and your pc's homepage because
you will have no protection.

afterwards your computer should
be running perfectly and smooth
as silk for a couple of days.

if this is true then make a restore
point.

then let us know your stats.

it would be safe to say that
if your pc is malfuntioning
with the basic methods above
then it would be simplier
to figure out what may be going
on with your system.

if however, the above proves
to be true and windows is
running at high performance
the next step is to install office.

Thanks, db. I had thought of that.

However, the PC is running great now (except for the O2K install!) and the
last time I installed, it was at a similar point...

well,

there are times that hardware
issues cause the installations
to reach their limits.

however, i have never experienced
a rude microsoft representative when
they are called for an activation
key.

the limits were really designed
to stop software piracy. so if
you have been the sole owner
of that product and it is currently
not active on another pc, which
they can verify through their own
system, then getting it reactivated
should be no problem.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/302878

but that is my opinion....

I haven't made it to the activation part yet as the CD key is not being
accepted, so I have yet to be presented with a phone number to call. Where
can I find that?

All I have found on microsoft.com is the $49 per call option...

Thanks,
BB.

db ´¯`·.. >

well,

if Microsoft has not
prevented you from
activating the product,
then the issue with the
product key as you described
is not attributed to the
installation limitations
as per your assumption.

for example, if you were
to install that office cd on
another pc and it was not
connected to the internet,
then you should not get a
product key error.

the error that would result
from the above would
be the inability to "activate"
the installed product.

"after" the successful installation
of office, Microsoft would
then count the installations
and determine whether or not
to activate the product.

OK, so what do I do?

To recap, I have successfully installed O2K from this CD on an old desktop
machine, reinstalled it there and them migrated it to a new desktop machine
with no issue. I then installed it on this laptop successfully. Now that I
have reinstalled XP Home on the laptop after a reformat, I can't get past the
CD key step either before the conventional install from CD, or after (when I
use the command line approach to install recommended in
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/842566).

Does anyone have a conclusive answer to this situation?

Many thanks.

db ´¯`·.. >

it is perplexing.

but i still think that
your third party softwares
are causing the issue.

you mentioned that
at one point the installation
to that same laptop was
successful. so the question
is did you have nav07 installed
back then?

if so, was the successful installation
of office back then done after or
before nav07 was installed?

i'm guessing before.

seems reasonable that if you had a
reformatted laptop,
installed windows only
then installed office, i really
don't think you would
have an error.

maybe you might double
check your regular
pc, open word, then
go to help/about and
double check the p.i.d.

what might be
helpful to ascertain
the cd keys is a software
called SIW from:

http://www.gtopala.com/

install it on your pc
then go select the software
menu option then license.

it will give you the cd keys
of the installed software on
the pc in which you can compare
the office cd key inputted into
the pc to that of the physical cd.

the software also provides
product keys, but these are
not the same as cd keys.

it's really a great software.
i have chatted with the programmer
a couple of times.

SIW installed and run...Office 200 listing only shows Product ID, not CD key...

Sigh...

hmm,

so if you go to the
menu bar, select software
then licenses, the cdkeys show up
except for o2k?

O2K does not appear in the list AI get with Software/Licenses

My list shows:
Windows Key
Internet Explorer
Nero - Burning Rom 6.3.1.25
PowerDVD 5.0
Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion
Microsoft Windows Defender 1.1

I see O2K listed under "Installed Programs" and "Applications", but no CD
key is given.

This, of course, is on the desktop.

Thanks,

well,

this sounds like a job for
microsoft.

here is a kb with information
that can help you. you can
likely get the pid it requests
from your pc when you call
and provide it to them.

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/help/HA011508341033.aspx

let us know what they
say.

Oh, well. No help from MSFT as it is an "OEM" version that came with the
original (long ago gone) computer.

It is just plain weird that this used to work!

I appreciate your help. Maybe open source is the way for me...

Bingo..... If the Office program is an OEM version it CAN'T be installed on
a machine that is not the original machine it was installed on. You are
attempting to violate the EULA for the software, in other words pirating the
software. Good bye.

D

db ´¯`·.. >

yeh,
it does seem weird
but OEM's have their
limitations. also, if
you updated windows
with everything, the
kill switch may have
been installed to inhibit
oem's from installing on
a none compliant machine.

in any case, keep the cd
handy. who knows maybe
you will figure it out later.

there is star office and others.
but i think you will find
investing in office 03 a
worthwhile one.

open source have
vulnerabilities that microsoft
has expended a great deal of time
and money in eliminating them
from office.

i think your "Bingo" would apply
upon the attempt to activate a
successful install -

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/300273: This message appears if you installed an
Original Equipment Manufacturer's (OEM) copy of Office XP, and you already
installed and activated the same OEM copy on another computer. OEM copies of
Office XP can only be activated on a single computer. Any attempt to activate
your Office license on a second computer results in the message in the
"Symptoms" section of this article.

Really doesn't matter. He is attempting to put the OEM software on a
different machine than what it was originally installed on. How he got is
installed successfully on his laptop after putting it on his old desktop is
beyond me but he is violating the license agreement and should NOT be helped
with his issue.

He should either purchase a new copy of the software or go to Open Office
http://download.openoffice.org/2.2.1/index.html (star office freebee) as you
suggested.

D

db ´¯`·.. >

well, it does matter
to me and i can help
whom i want and when
ever i choose.

firstly, in regards to the
installation of the
oem, microsoft has
put into place a number
of mechanisms to protect
themselves from piracy.

honestly, you don't have
to play their policeman.
you don't get paid for it
nor do you get credit for
it and frankly, we don't know
your ethical standards anyway.

for all we know, you have
violated microsoft eula
on a number of occasions,
maybe intentionally or unintentionally.

secondly, i believe i was
successful with helping
the o.p. because it helped
him to get a better picture
of the issue he was having
and acquired further insight
into his computers.

but it is also my hope that you
understand something as
well.

unfortunately, your three cents were
unhelpful and unnecessary
as the thread had a logical
conclusion, until you came
in and stunk it up.

if you wanted to be professional
about it, you could have provided
a link to a kb describing the
policies for oem's rather than
a rightesous and self serving
statement.

but i am sure you will
do what you want and
when you want, as well.
