assertion failed!

I just downloaded Office 2003 Service Pack 2. Since then, every time I open
Word or any Word file, I get this following error message: "Assertion
failed! Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\WINWORD.EXE\ File:
..\scoring.cpp Line: 133 Expression: ret For information on how your
program can cause an assertion failure, see the Visual C++ documentation on
asserts. (Press Retry to debug the application - JIT must be enabled)
Abort Retry Ignore"
If I press either Abort or Retry, Word closes. If I press IGNORE, then this
error message goes away and I can apparently keep working OK in Word. This
problem arose IMMEDIATELY after I downloaded/installed Service Pack 2. What
should I do about it? I am 100% non-techie, and don't want to pay Microsoft
$35 bucks for a problem their "update" created!

In Word, try turning off the Dorland's or Spellex medical
spellchecker in Tools | Options | Spelling & Grammar | Speller
type: Normal | OK. If that fixes the problem, then contact
Elsevier or Spellex to see if there is a program update available.

We have worked closely with Microsoft to provide the following fix to
the Service Pack 2 problems you recently reported. We have
successfully compiled a new spelling DLL which will no longer create
the scoring.CPP error you received.

Please click on the link below and follow the instructions to download
and install the Office 2003 Service Pack 2 Fix on your computer:

***** Be sure to close ALL Microsoft programs prior to proceeding *****

Office 2003 Service Pack 2 Fix:

1. Select the "Save" option when downloading and not "Open" or "Run
from Current Location" as these options will cause the installation to
fail.

2. You will be asked where you would like to save the file. We
suggest you download the file to your Desktop which will create an icon
there.

3. Once the download has completed, simply double click on the new
icon on your Desktop

4. When the "WinZip Self-Extractor" window appears, select the
"UnZip" button

5. You will receive a message that says "1 file(s) unzipped
successfully"

If anyone needs additional assistance, please contact
(e-mail address removed) and we will be happy to assist you.

I followed the instructions below to the letter--I closed ALL programs,
including all Microsoft programs, before performing the "fix." After I
clicked on UNZIP, I immediately received the following error message: "Can't
create output file: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft
Shared\PROOF\Mssp3spx.dll" I also tried opening a Word file -- and the
problem (the assertion failed! error message) continues and is not fixed.
Now what?

This message usually occurs for one of three reasons:

1. You do not have administrator right to the computer and therefore
cannot overwrite files in the 'Program Files' folder

2. An Office program was open at the time you ran the installation
which locked the file (you've already stated was not the case)

3. Office was running a background process which prevented the file
swap from taking place

You can change the path of the unzip program to your Desktop and
manually transfer the file to the (C:\Program Files\Common
Files\Microsoft Shared\PROOF) folder. This should force the overwrite.

Once completed, the Mssp3Spx.DLL file should be dated 10/06/05 and be
approximately 84 kb.
