"Assign myself to an existing task" duplicates task

I'm trying to use the "Assign myself to an existing task" feature of Web
Access but when I do assign myself to an existing task and the assignment is
saved and published, the original task stays unassigned and project created a
duplicate task with the assignment in it. Is this a bug or operator error?
