Assigning resources to a task

Here is my dilema, and its a rookie dilema so bear with me :)

Say I have construction of a home going on.
And I have the Electrician starting 2/1/08 for 2 weeks.
And I have the Roofer starting 2/1/08 for 1 week.

However they are both my employees, and the roofer is also an electrician,
so when he is done with his task, I would move him into the electrical part
of this job.
How do I book the roofer on the electrical part, starting after he is done
on the roofing, so that he is not double booked?

Hello Antonio,

You are too hard on yourself -- not a "rookie" dilemma at all.

You can assign the roofer/electrician to the electrical work and
specify a 5 day delay in the start of the work.

From the Gantt chart view, choose Window > Split to split your screen
horizontally and display the Task Form at the bottom. Click in the
lower portion to active that part of the screen and then click your
secondary mouse button to display the shortcut menu. From the
shortcut menu, choose the "Resource Schedule" format. You should see
any resources currently assigned to the electrical task. Click under
the last resource in the Resource Name area and select your
roofer/electrician from the list. I assume you also want the resource
to work 40 hours, so enter 40 hours in the work column. In the delay
column, enter 5d to delay the resource's work 5 days from the start of
the task. Click the OK button in the Task form to make the
assignment.

Note, this can also be accomplished in the Task Usage view by entering
zeros for the work in the first five days. I find using the delay
field a bit faster however.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.
