Assignment Details vs Timesheet

R

Robert X

Hello,

I'm looking for an efficient way of tracking progress on tasks (Project
Server 2007)
What are the differences between the "Assignment Details" page in PWA where
actual work can be entered on a daily basis, and the Timesheet page where
actual work can be entered on a daily basis too.
How these actuals are used by the system?
Thanks for your help!

Timesheet track ALL time, but do not update assignments, whereas task updates
track and update plans with time spent on assignments. Data entered into
one, can be copied across to the other if required. You can choose not to
use timesheets if they're not required.

Hello NZ Projects,

<<Timesheet track ALL time>> : does that means that Timesheets track time
spent on "Activities" ?
Is there a process of validation by the assignment owner for Task updates,
as for timesheets?
Are these actuals used the same way in the OLAP cube ?

Thanks again

Robert:

Task tracking and time sheets are two separate applications that can swap
data back and forth when items appear on both the Timesheet and the My Tasks
page. All time that is used to drive task progress must be entered through
the Assignment details page. Whether you import this data from the timesheet
or enter it manually, this is the only page that updates task progress in
projects. It is possible to have different line items in each entry point,
as these function independently. There are cubes that contain data from both
inputs and again, these do not necessarily match each other

Thanks a lot Gary,

<<Task tracking and time sheets are two separate applications >>
What are the purposes of these 2 applications ? Why aren't they melt in one
unique application. What is the advantage of such a split?

<<There are cubes that contain data from both inputs and again, these do not
necessarily match each other>>
A little bit disturbing!
How can we distinguish, in the OLAP Cube, the data from one input or another
input (Timesheet vs. My Tasks)
Thanks again

Mytask drives projethe calculations on costs/progress etc ..

however, timesheets can be hooked into billings and forms the b ase for
billable /non billable hrs.. which then can be directly assoicated to a cost
center.

So in my viewpoints [ Assignment Details = Projects. Timesheet = Billing ]

That's one possible interpretation. After you've been in the world of PM and
timetracking for a while, it makes sense that the two are disconnected,
however splitting the interface, IMO, is a design error. I believe a better
design would be to provide a single point of entry with the flow controls
happening in the background based on configurations. I think it will get
there eventually.

As for identifying which data is which in Analysis, this is fairly clear
with Timesheet data contained in its own cubes, of which there are 14 in
PS2007.
