Assignments Details page - Actual Work

Regarding Project Server 2007, tracking method = Hours of work done per period.

When a user goes to the Assignment Details page, and enter values for Actual Work and Overtime and click on Calculate, the "Work" field copies the Actual Work. This does not make sense for me.
How can we track planned work vs actual work this way?

Yes, it makes total sense, and here's why. In Microsoft Project (any
version), Actual Work always replaces planned Work. If I planned that a
task would take 8 hours of Work, and the task actually took 12 hours of
Actual Work, why wouldn't the 12 hours replace the original planned 8 hours?
To know the original planned Work for any task, you must save a Baseline in
your project before you "go live" and have team members begin reporting
actual progress. Hope this helps.

There are two fields, Total work: and Timephased work:, if you are exceeding
the planned work, say 10h for the week by entering 4h for each day, then the
work will equal the actual work of 20h as it exceeded the plan.

If you want to know the planned versus actual, then set the baseline, using
Tools - Tracking - Set Baseline. Then you can view the Table - Variance and
see the difference of Planned versus Actual.
