Associate a .dot file to a particulate file

If a number of people work on a document the .dot file can get "polluted"
with undesirable formatting. I know I can create a custom .dot but (I think)
you have to go into tools and manually pull the right .dot. I'd like to skip
this and have microsoft automatically associate a .dot file to a particulate
file. Is currently doable?
