assorted problems

Processor: intel

I recently got office 2008 for the Mac after using 2004 for some year with reasonably few problems. My first question is this: can Word 2008 seriously not retain window sizes and positions? Also, whenever I reopen a document I have to resize and reposition it. When I use the ruler to make a paragraph indent in a block of text I have to scroll away from it and then back before I can actually see it take effect--and even then sometimes the text is garbled due to screen refresh problems (I use a 2.8GHz imac with 4 gigs of RAM). This is like a beta version. It's too bad product review do little more than rate products based on bells and whistles.

Yep. It's a bug.

Yep. You're lucky if they've ever even used the product. Often, they just
use the "review" the software company wrote for them.

Your average reviewer dare not say anything bad about a product in case the
software vendor refuses to buy ads in the magazine.

Sad, really...

You mean Microsoft would stoop to something like that? Pull advertising
if they received a bad review? Sure you jest?? ;-)

I'm sure the agency would have done it only with word from the man
himself, or his underlings. ;-)

Hi Phillip:

I am equally certain that they would do it without even consulting Steve
Ballmer :)

Seriously, Phillip: An advertising agency sets up a campaign and then hires
a media buying company to buy the space for it. They know the client won't
hire them again if the campaign doesn't generate many sales, so they do
everything in their power to maximise the success of their campaign.

They also know that the client won't hire them again if they are on the
phone every ten minutes asking the client what to do and generally wasting
their time. These people are supposed to be competent professionals, they
are supposed to "know" what to do.

The result of all that is that the media buying company will not buy space
in magazines that are likely to carry "critical" reviews of the products.

This is HOW Apple and Microsoft have gotten away with it for so long, and
how they continue to get away with it. You would be surprised how much more
fun the media would be if it ever told the truth :)

But with modern complex software products, the media companies generally do
not have the skills or equipment to even discover the truth. I was reading
a review on cell phones today and was astonished to discover that the
journalists TESTED the noise and distortion ratings of the music players:

Now: THAT is what I call a "review". You won't see that often.

And before you start: no, the iPhone does not have what it takes to compete
at that level :)

Cheers

himself, or his underlings. ;-)
