At Wits' End--Error Message "Web Host Does Not Have FP Extensions Installed"

J

Jeremy

Can someone please help me? I am at wits' end.

FP 2000 has been working well for over a year. A couple of months ago,
right after a Windows Update, it could no longer publish to my web server.
The message said that the server did not have FP Extensions installed.

I had the extensions deleted from the server and then reinstalled. No luck
publishing.

I tried publishing via FP's ftp function, but I'd get messages that said the
file was unavailable, or it would show a window that said it was listing all
the files at the web site, then it would ask for my name and password. I'd
enter them, and a few seconds later I'd get the same entry screen, with my
User Name filled in, but a blank password screen. I'd reenter the password,
and as soon as I clicked OK, I would once again receive the same
screen--with my name filled in, but the password field blank. I could go
round and round like this many times over, but FP would never get beyond
that point.

Here is the really strange thing--every so often, it would work, and I could
publish to my server with no problem whatsoever. But, once I rebooted my
computer, I'd have the same problems of inability to publish again. If
lucky, I might be able to publish to the server once per week, at most.

I called my web hosting service and they were able to upload to my site
using FP 2000 with no problem--so it appears to be some kind of
configuration issue at my computer.

I tried renaming my HOST file--just in case there was something blocking the
connection. No luck.

I turned off my firewall. Still no luck.

I tried going into FP and doing a File>Open and then entering http:// plus
the web address for my site. Previously, I would be able to see all the
files in my site using that procedure. Now I get a box with an error
message: "The folder http://xxxxxx.com is no longer available."

Yesterday I went into Control Panel and completely uninstalled Microsoft
Office 2000. Then I used the original install disks to reinstall FP from
scratch. No luck. I'm still unable to publish to the server.

I tried putting my web's URL into my Trusted Zone. No luck.

I checked the be sure that the option "Prompt For Username And Password" was
checked in IE's Tools>Security> settings. No luck.

I tried other settings, like Logon Anonymously, just to see if that would
work. No luck.

I checked MS Knowledge Base but had no luck in finding anything that seemed
relevant to my situation.

I feel certain that this is some little configuration issue, that can
probably be resolved in no time, but I am out of ideas. What confuses me is
that I cannot even publish via FTP, so I suspect some kind of password
issue, not necessarily FP Extensions.

Oh, by the way, when I tried getting in via FTP using my browser, the name
and password worked with no problem, and I could see the main directory and
all the subdirectories of my files on the server, so it appears that the
server is not having any password issues.

To sum up, when I try to publish using http, I get a message saying that my
server does not have FP Extensions installed, and the upload box defaults to
FTP. When I try to publish using FTP, I get the Username/Password box over
and over again. When I put in my password, the entry box returns with a
blank password field. When I try to do a file>open and enter my site's URL,
I get the "folder not available" error message.

Does anybody know what is happening and how I can resolve this? My head is
spinning.

Thanks.

Any time you FTP with FrontPage you break the extensions on the server.
So, they will need to be reset again.
Once they are reset, "never" FTP with FrontPage.

However, logging in using the browser using FTP does "not" break the extensions.

That said:

Go here: http://www.95isalive.com/fixes/fpclean.htm and download FP Cleaner ( with
Expression Web Designer and SharePoint Designer support )
Download links are at the bottom of the page.
Run the functions that clear:
The Hidden Temporary files.
The Hidden Cache (*.web) files.

Then have your host restore the extensions one more time.

See if it helps.

I downloaded and ran the app, I had my hosting company reinstall FP
extensions, I rebooted my computer and when I tried to publish to the web
host I still got that error message that my server did not have FP
Extensions, just as before.

Jeremy - I had many problems with one of the Windows updates, specifically
Security Update KB 908531. When I removed that, all my numerous FrontPage
problems went away. You might give it a try. You can alway reinstall that
update.

Is that the *exact* error message you are receiving?

After running FP Cleaner when I open my web files on my hard drive and then
try to publish them to the server, a box opens at the point where I would
have formerly seen the Name and Password screen. The exact wording is:

"The server could not keep your request. Contact your Internet service
provider or web server administrator to make sure that the server has Front
Page Server Extensions installed. For more specific information, click
Details."

And, when I click on the "Details" button, I get a box that reads, "Below is
the message that the server returned. For more information, contact your
Internet Service provider or web server administrator."

No message from the server ever appears in the box below.

I did as you suggested, and it had no impact on the FP publishing problem.

This is driving me absolutely nuts.

This morning I tried opening http://www.mydomain.com in Front Page, and it
was one of those rare times that I got in! (Yesterday, per your suggestion,
I had the web hosting company reinstall FP Extensions, but I still could not
get in).

I then invoked a second copy of Front Page on my computer, this one was set
to open my web files on my local hard drive. So now I had two running
copies of FP--one with my server files open and the other with my local web
files open.

I copied two files from my server and pasted them into my local web files on
my hard drive. The files were fphover.class and fpoverx.class.

I then shut down both running instances of FP, I re-ran FP Cleaner and I
rebooted my PC.

I came back up, opened FP and was able to connect with my server and publish
changed files!

I rebooted, came back up again, ran FP and was able to connect with my web
server again, by opening http://www.mydomain.com. It asked for my username
and password and after a couple of seconds I could see my files.

I rebooted, came back up, started FP, opened my web here on my hard drive,
published changed pages to the server, and FP took my name and password and
connected to the server, as normal!

So, I've been able to connect three times in a row, with no problems
whatsoever, after copying those two files from my web server and overwriting
them onto my local web files.

I don't know if my problem is solved, but I'm tickled pink so far.

Does anyone have any thoughts about what has happened? Does this clarify
the problem, or narrow down the causes any?

Both files are related to using JAVA Hoover buttons
- they are called that for a reason
You need a Java engine on your PC (and every site users PC) in order to use them

IMHO
Drop the JAVA (and Hoovers) from your site as most user block it

I was able to publish to the web site several times this morning, even after
rebooting.

Then I ran Ad-Aware and deletet about 20 MRUs, some of which pertained to
Front Page.

Now I'm unable to publish to the web site and I cannot use FP to open my
domain and list the files that are in the server. I am right back to the
same problems I had before.

Could I have deleted something that was critical to FP? This is really
frustrating, because the problem is intermittent and I am unaware of doing
anything now that I haven't been doing for the past couple of years. FP
worked fine, then in April it suddenly began blocking my ability to upload.
