Attached files sending/receiving as .dat files

Hello (and HELP, please)!

When using Microsoft Outlook Express 6 on a particular
computer, attached files mostly get sent and received
as .dat files, even though they are originally .doc
or .xls files.

Is there some sort of setting that is incorrect on this
computer? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
