Attached template Word 2003 vs Word 2007

Hi!
In Word 2003 a document would remeber what template was used to create the
document and have access to toolbars and macros within the template
regardless of where the template was stored as long as the user or shared
templates path pointed to that folder.

In Word 2007 the document remembers the entire path to the template. This
causes problems when templates are moved or when we create documents for our
customers to use beccause they don't store the templates in the same folder
as we do.

Does anyone know haw to work around this? I would like the document to
recognize the template providing that it is in one of the template paths.
Please help!

You've posted in the Word for Mac newsgroup. Probably want to repost in
the Word 2007 newsgroup (Windows).

That being said, my recollection is that Word remembering the full path
to the template is how both 2003 and 2007 work. Before sending a DOC
file to a customer, simply remove the link to the template. Word will
automatically attach it to "Normal".

That being said ... I avoid sending DOC files to people unless I expect
them to collaborate with me on the DOC file. Fraught with too much
risk--they can mess with the document and blame me, they can get a virus
frome somewhere else and since they know that DOC files can carry
viuses, they erroneously blame me, they can change he document and
pretend it was me who wrote the wrong info, they could have the wrong
version of Word, they don't view the document in the right way which
retains the formatting and hence since "ugly" on their machine they
blame me for "ugliness". All of these things I've seen happen over the
years.

Unless reason not to, send document deliverables as PDF or other more
readable format. Just a thought.

Hi Asa:

Rob is correct: Word has always remembered the full path. However, if that
is not available, Word will look down a hierarchy of "preferred locations"
for a template matching that name.

It takes the first one of the correct name that it finds. The hierarchy is:

1) The folder the document is in

2) The path to the attached template

3) The User templates folder

4) The Workgroup templates folder

6) The folder that contains WinWord.exe (the application)

7) The Normal template

I won't guarantee that I have 2, 3, and 4 around the correct way:
information on the details is difficult to come by, but that's the general
scheme of things.

If you send the document and the template, and tell your customer to open
the template using "File>Open", then Save it using "Save As", Word will
automatically put it into the User Templates folder.

Or tell the customer to keep the template in the same folder as they store
the document. Either way, when they open the document Word will attach the
template.

Otherwise, you need to coach your customers on the use of Network templates,
which becomes very complex for roaming users.

Hope this helps
