Attaching a File to an email (via network)

I just tried to send an email with an attachment that is "housed" on a
computer that I'm networked to, but I wasn't able to attach it. I could
attach a file if it were on the same computer that the Outlook 2007 was on,
but not one that had to be accessed through My Network Places. I assume I
have some setting somewhere that's keeping me from being able to attach the
file. Anybody have a clue?

Could you clarify what 'I wasn't able to attach it' means? What did you do
to try to attach it?

If you are trying to attach it as a shortcut and the person to whom you are sending the item is not on your network, they will be unable to open it.

I clicked the "paper clip" (attach file), navigated to the network drive
that contained a .pdf file I wished to attach to an email, highlighted the
file, but it would not attach to the email nor would it appear in the "File
Name" box at the bottom of the screen next to the "insert" button. Step by
step, I:

Clicked on New Email
Entered the recipient's name
Entered the Subject of the email
Typed a short note in the message body ("Here's the file we talked about.")
Clicked on the "Attach File" button (the paperclip)
Went to "My Network Places"
Worked my way to the folder that contained the .pdf file I wanted to attach
Highlighted the file (and tried double-clicking it)
Nothing happened .... it did not attach to the email.

the "server" computer. Could that be stopping the ability to attach a file ?

As a lark, can you exit outlook, go to Start - Run and run outlook /safe
and try composing a new message and attaching the file that way?

I mean, I'm assuming the cancel button still works when you do the above
steps, and that the Insert button actually does depress to show you're
pushing it.

Can anyone else in your office attach files this way from a network? Also,
do you have full control to that share, or just read-only access?

Norton is on my kill list for using with any mail client. You can try disabling it to see if it works then.

The computer that was sending the email doesn't have Norton Internet
Security activiated, but the one that the file resides on does.

In addition to the other suggestions, can you open the share in a Windows
Explorer window and then drag the file to the compose window?

You've confused me with your suggestion. If I "drag the file to the compose
window", would that "attach" it to the email?

disable Norton every time I want to send an email with an attachment and
then enable it again after the email is sent. BTW .... I tried again this
afternoon and WAS able to do an attachment. Odd it didn't work the other
day. Maybe the fact that both computers got rebooted in the interim had
something to do with it.

It's part of troubleshooting. If it works with it disabled, then you need
to talk to Norton to figure out what's wrong. If it doesn't, then you know
that's not what is causing the problem. It's pretty common in
troubleshooting.

And you're right, you shouldn't have to disable norton every time you want
to send an email with an attachment. That's why you would talk to Norton to
get it fixed, or find a different program to take its place.

Norton does NOTHING to protect your system with email integration. Incoming emails with infected payloads are scanned by your real-time Norton scanner. If you think outgoing email is safer using a scanner, you are about 4 steps too late in protecting your system since your real-time scanner should have detected the infection BEFORE you composed the email and selected to send.

Wecome to Marketing Scams 101 - scaring people into buying something they DON'T need by preying on fears of email infections, which are covered by any AV program by default and required nothing extra to detect.
