attaching a photo

My last question was answered so quickly...I'll try another. I'm not able to attach a pic from iPhoto when I'm composing an email. iPhoto is listed in the menu, but only shows library and won't let me browse or choose the photos. If I click choose, it says I need Aladdin Systems Stuffit software. I CAN attach pics from photo booth. I can also send a photo if I have iPhoto open, choose a pic from events, and click on the email button on the bottom.

What menu are you referring to that lists iPhoto? If you are adding an
attachment, or inserting a picture, via the "Insert" button in the
toolbar, the list that appears is a file browser. You can select any
image you can browse to on your hard drive.

Where are you seeing iPhoto's library?

My last question was answered so quickly...I'll try another. I'm not able to
attach a pic from iPhoto when I'm composing an email. iPhoto is listed in the
menu,

What menu? Which application?
but only shows library and won't let me browse or choose the photos. If

Which application is asking for stuffit? Entourage or IPhoto?
I CAN attach
pics from photo booth. I can also send a photo if I have iPhoto open, choose a
pic from events, and click on the email button on the bottom.

Two different applications and two different solutions.

Let's address adding a photo to Entourage.

You can drag a photo into an HTML message and it will go into the body.

You can add a photo by using the attachment pane using the "Add" button.

You can drag a photo into the attachment pane.
==================
If Entourage is asking you for Stuffit, this sounds like Office 2004 that
installs a version of Stuffit for sending attachments.

A folder cannot be sent without being compressed. You can use the Mac OS
archive function to zip a file or use a third party application like
Stuffit. Compression will only be 'required' by Entourage when you are
trying to attach a folder _OR_ an application bundle (which is just a folder
in disguise).

If you archive a single item, the archived file has the name of the original
item with a ".zip" extension. If you archive multiple items at once, the
archived file is called Archive.zip.

Entourage 2004 was originally designed with a much older version of Stuffit
than the one available now. The Stuffit engine name (or location?) changed
in an update and broke Entourage's ability to use it.
====================
Now to get a photo out of iPhoto is not really an Entourage problem, and
since I rarely use iPhoto I'm not a really good expert to help, but I will
try. Without knowing which version of the OS and iPhoto, the directions
could be wrong. Always give version details for help.

You can control which e-mail application iPhoto uses from the General tab of
the Preferences pane under the iPhoto menu. The icon of the selected
application will appear for Email in the tool bar at the bottom of the
iPhoto window.

Select a photo and click on the email icon to send. A window pops up that
asks for size. That's it.

Let's stop here before this gets too long and confusing. Try the above
suggestion and post back. Remember we need details.

1. Identify the version of Entourage that you are using. Often there are
different solutions for different versions. How to find version info.
<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/version/index.html>

2. Identify the version of the OS that you are using. For OS X it's under
the Blue Apple in the menu bar....About this Mac

3. For Send & Receive problems, identify the type of account. Is it a POP,
IMAP, Exchange or a web based account? Don't know? See Accounts

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/accounts/index.html>

Give as much detail about your problem and what you have done so far to
troubleshoot. Just saying that I have tried all the suggestions on the list
doesn't mean very much. Saying "it just doesn't work" isn't helpful either.
Give details!

Allen, I guess it isn't a menu, but a file browser, as you say. I don't want to insert a photo into the body of the message but instead just send it as an attachment. When I have Entourage open, begin a letter, and click on Add Attachments, the file browser opens. I see iPhoto Library in the browser, but I'm unable to browse individual pics within iPhoto. I AM able to browse individual pics in Photo Booth and attach those. This just seems odd to me, that I can browse and select from one but not from the other.

Diane, my problem is with attaching a pic to an email message in Entourage. I am able to send a pic directly from iPhoto but I'd like to be able to attach it from within Entourage.

my mac is version 10.4.11 and Entourage is version 11.4.0

I used the wrong terminology when I said "menu" What happens is this. I begin a message in Entourage, click on Add Attachment and the file browser opens iPhoto Library is in the browser, but I'm not able to browse individual pics. Photo Booth is also in the browser, and i AM able to browse, select, and attach a pic from there (for what it's worth, there is a small gray triangle next to Photo Booth, but not next to iPhoto Library). I don't understand why I can browse one and not the other.

I believe the stuffit information comes up because I double clicked on iPhoto Library, trying to "open" it, and it acted like I wanted to attach the entire library folder.

I don't understand how to drag a photo into the attachment pane. When the Choose Attachment pane opens, I click on Pictures, then I see what I just described.

iPhoto Library is in the browser, but I'm not able to browse individual pics.

That's because iPhoto is storing the photos in a database. You can't see
inside a Library file using the Finder interface.
Photo Booth is also in the browser, and i AM able to browse, select, and
attach a pic from there (for what it's worth, there is a small gray triangle
next to Photo Booth, but not next to iPhoto Library). I don't understand why I

Correct, Entourage was thinking you wanted the Library and it would have to
be compressed.
I don't understand how to drag a photo into the attachment pane. When the
Choose Attachment pane opens, I click on Pictures, then I see what I just
described.

You can't do what you want. If you wanted to drag into the attachment pane,
you would need to open iPhoto and either drag out the photo or send as
attachment then drag the photo from it to your message. Obviously iPhoto and
Entourage were not meant by Apple to work together like this. I'm not even
sure Mail could do what you want. Nope, I stand corrected, just opened Mail
and it does allow you to do this. So another option would be to use Mail
when you want to send photos. I use Mail when I want to use the templates
for sending birthday greetings etc.

Diane, I'm sorry to hear that I can't do what I want, but glad to know I wasn't doing anything wrong. I'm new to macs. On my pc I was able to browse and attach anything. I'm able to send pics directly from iPhoto, so that's good enough for me. Thanks for the help.

Correction. There is a way. I just forgot about it. Sorry.

New feature in Office 2008.

Tools --> Toolbox --> Object Palette --> Photos button.
This pulls directly from iPhoto.

This should be in Entourage Help. Off to report it. BTW, any user can send a
comment to Help which is now being updated for online viewing. At the bottom
of the page you will see "Was this information helpful?

Click on the Yes, No or Somewhat buttons. Add your comments in the box.
Especially helpful if you add what should be added. :)

Diane,
Colleen said she was using Entourage 11.4.0, so that's Entourage 2004, not
2008.

Also, even though the photo appears as an attachment when you send it, many
mail readers (including Entourage 2004) will display it in the body of the
message when you open the message. At least that's what happened when I just
sent a photo from iPhoto 7.1 to my .mac IMAP accoutn.

In the Entourage newsreader, I don't see the other posts like you do on the
web interface. I have to manually open each thread to view read message. So
unless you reply quoting back, I have to go back and search for what was
said. I'm not going to use the web interface and will probably cut back on
my participation on the newsgroup if I have to work doubly hard to help out.
I have several physical problems with my hands and there is just so much I
can do physically.

Diane,
I'm sorry. I had no intention of offending you.

I too use the Entourage newsreader. However, I've been out of town and I've
been trying to catch up since I got back. Thus I had the whole thread in
front of me when I replied and it was easy for me to see which version she
had.

I certainly don't want to make extra work for you (or for anyone else).

No offence taken. Just want users to know we all don't see the same thing.

The Entourage newsreader isn't the best newsreader around, but it has
worked. Now with the forum being used by most of the people posting it makes
it doubly hard on us that use a newsreader.
