Hi Devon:
Yes, I figured it was accidental, which is the only reason I answered
For the benefit of others, here's what I said:
Hi Devon:
Application/Octet-stream is correct if you are sending MIME (and you should
be...)
Gmail and Yahoo are the same thing: you get what you pay for -- they're not
very smart.
Use an email client and you will have much more success. Also: Configure
your Mac to "always add the file extension". Word doesn't need extensions,
it can figure out what's in the file by looking inside. But Mac OS X is
Unix, and it does need the extensions to correctly advise the receiving
application what is coming.
You can try zipping the file and attaching the zip, if you must use the
freemailers: that sometimes outwits them.
But chances are your email will be dumped at the recipient's end, because it
comes from a freemail sender and contains an attachment (a classic sign of
spam -- If you also send the email formatted (HTML format) then "three
strikes and you're out"
If I were you, I would configure Entourage or Mail to use a proper email
service. I use
http://www.fastmail.fm, but your ISP provides an SMTP
service with your account: look up their home page to see how to configure
it.
Cheers
sorry john i accidentally responded to you personally and not the
group, but here it goes again for everyone's benefit, this happens
when I try to send word 2008 (.docx) or the 04 compatible version
(.doc) of the files. I think the problem is in the way mac or word
for mac uploads files when you are attaching them to the email,
becuase I experience the same problem whether I use gmail or yahoo
mail and also I tried chanigng the encoding type through gmail and
that had no effect. Mac and word are uploading the files as
application/octet-stream. I read elsewhere that the proper type is
application/msword. How do I change my preferences on the computer or
through word for mac 2008 to make the files appear as application/
msword, since I have already tried changing the way that gmail encodes
emails and it didn't change the problem.
Thanks!
Devon
Sorry, you have not provided the version of Word and the type of file that
you are sending, so we cannot answer you. [Yes, I know it was a "Word"
file, I need to know which of the eight kinds of Word file it was
]
The sad reality on the Internet is that if you use a "free" service, you get
what you pay for. If you use Entourage or Apple Mail to send your files,
you have a much higher chance that they will reach their destination
If you get back to us with the details, we may be able to suggest something.
Hope this helps
