Attachment Hyperlink opens with IE! Stop!

Outlook opens Internet Explorer when a user clicks on a hyperlink in an
email. If somebody sends me a local/LAN machine storage link for a file as a
hyperlink, even that opens in IE! Why? For example, someone saves an image on
common server and sends me a link on mail. When I click, the image opens in
IE instead of my default imaging program. How do I stop this?

Screenshot 2 is the email message, where the IP address listed is our office
intranet ID..have blurred it for security reasons.
Screenshot 1 is the link opening in IE instead of IrfanViewer of Microsoft
Photo viewer. Irfan is my default.

Sure you can, with a real newsreader. However, you don't need a screenshot.
Just type an example of the link. I find that links like this work for me:

<\\server\folder\folder\folder\file.ext>
