attachment problem NOT solved by suggested fix in help menu

OE 6.0 with both SP1 & 2. A few custom settings.

In the window that lists all my e-mail, some lines have a paperclip
indicating that there's an attachment. However, in the preview pane there is
no paperclip, no indication of any attachments, no error messages, no nothing.

Help menu suggested un-clicking "Do not allow attachments...." and then
rebooting. Problem is, that option wasn't clicked to start with. Any ideas?
