If you save it to a separate location it should make a
copy that is not an attachment. Either open the attachment
and click on 'save as' or highlight it without opening it
and right click and click on 'save as'.

How do I view an image, such as a jpeg or gif, not as an a attachment?

If you're using Office Outlook 2003 (I assume you're referring to an
email), use the Insert->Picture menu item. From there you can choose the
"From File" selection and a file browser dialog will come up allowing you
to select the picture file you want to insert.
