Attachments are in email but are not visible

Sometimes when I try to attach a WORD document or Photos, they do not show up embedded or as an attachment in the email. However, I can see by the size of the email in the outbox that the photos/docs are actually attached. Most times the recipient will receive the 'phantom' attachments but sometimes not.

How do I fix this?

How are you adding? Dragging into the body of an HTML message or using
Attachment window to add?

I've tried 3 methods. No consistent success when any: 1) drag from iphoto; 2) drag off desktop 3) use attachment window

Only HTML will show up in the body of the message when you are composing.
Some attachments will show up below a plain text message when received.

You mentioned two problems.

1) attachments showing up in message
2) recipients do not receive

Your reply didn't indicate if the way an attachment was added affected
receiving.

My first attempt is always to drag the photo in the email template. I use the attachment window only if that doesn't work. And I can't recall if the attachment gives different results to the person receiving the email. However, neither way will attach the photo as an embedded file or as an attachment - either would make me happy.

I believe these were all HTML based emails as well.

Let's do some troubleshooting...

Steps to help determine where the problem is located.

1) you can eliminate your Identity by creating a new Identity in Entourage
and see if you experience the same problem.

2) if a new Identity still exhibits the same issues, then create a new User
in System Preferences and test Entourage there.

3) If the problems still exist in the new User, it's a problem with your
Office install or your base OS files. If running the Apple combo does not
fix, then you might need to do an "Archive & Install".

Let me know if you can add attachments in a new Identity or a new User.

I had already tried step #2. It didn't help.
I tried #2 - new identity today. It still didn't help

I downloaded the Apple combo and it didn't fix it either. (I just downloaded it to my Hard drive. Will it automatically run after a restart - or do I need to say in some specific place?)

what is an "archive and install"?

Can you use "Forward as Attachment" to send me an example off list.

what is an "archive and install"?

Archive and Install

1) Insert the Mac OS X Install Disc and double-click the Install Mac OS X
icon.

2) Follow the onscreen instructions. In the pane where you select the
destination disk, select your current Mac OS X disk (in most cases, it will
be the only one available).

3) Click Options. If you want to save your existing files, users, and
network settings, select ³Archive and Install,² and then select ³Preserve
Users and Network Settings.² If you want to erase everything on your
computer and reinstall Mac OS X, select ³Erase and Install.² You can¹t
recover erased data.

4) Click Continue.

5) Click Customize to select which parts of Mac OS X you¹d like to install,
or click Install to perform a basic installation (recommended).

Once the install has finished, your system will be at whatever level the
disk you have is. So if your Install DVD/CD disk is 10.5.0, that's what
version of OS will be on your Mac. You will need to download the appropriate
Combo Updater from Apple's site to restore the system to a higher version.
After you run the combo, allow Software Update to download and install any
additional updates.

Hi Diane - thanks for all the help.

I've reinstalled OS X and d/l the combo updater and all the additional available updates.

I am still having the problem dragging photos from iphoto into an email - they do not show up yet they are attached. From the few tests I've done, it appears docs and photos attach now using the attachement tool and dragging from the desktop seems to work better as well.

Any other suggestions...

I am still having the problem dragging photos from iphoto into an email

You can control which e-mail application iPhoto uses from the General tab of
the Preferences pane under the iPhoto menu. The icon of the selected
application will appear for Email in the tool bar at the bottom of the
iPhoto window.

Select the photo and click on the purple E to email the photo. A window pops
up allowing you to select size. Click "Compose". A new email will open in
Entourage with the photo attached.

In Entourage 2008, select the new Toolbox and click on the right icon,
Object Palette. Select the camera tab. This puts you into iPhoto. It does
not give any options to reduce photos. As a comparison, email from iPhoto on
medium, produced an attachment of 56.98 KB. The same photo dragged in from
the Object Palette was 1.13 MB.
