Attachments don't automatically open from Eudora

I just installed the newest update to MS Word 2008 for Mac and I now have a problem.

I use Eudora for email and I often receive MS Word attachments. In the past, double-clicking on the attachment icon automatically opened the particular MS Word document. Now, it only opens MS Word (a new blank document), but it doesn't open the particular file that I received and has been placed in my Eudora attachments folder.

I have verified that the attachments are still being placed in the same folder, but MS Word isn't automatically finding them.

Any suggestions on what to do?

Many thanks,
Steve

Hi Steve,

It's a known issue--when you use File | Open from within Word, then they
will open fine, and once you make any edit and resave them, they will
double-click fine again. It's caused by Eudora (and some other programs)
assigning a file type from Office 6 to attachments, and SP1 installed a
security fix so that double-clicking documents with very old file types
no longer works. You can complain to MS by using Help | Send Feedback in
any app.

Corentin Cras-Meneur has a script here:

That I believe you can install, attach to the location Eudora uses to
place attachments, and have it automatically reset the file type.
However, I don't think that will allow you to double-click directly from
your email, just to avoid using File | Open. Not sure, haven't tested it
myself.

Hi Steve -

This is a subject that has been beaten to death in this group & elsewhere
since SP 1 was released, so search the group if you are interested in the
myriad opinions, attitudes & allegations:)

If you just want results, simply use Word's File> Open command (Command+O)
to navigate to & open the file. You should have no problem in doing so. Then
do either of 2 things:

1- Make any kind of change in the doc (which you can edit out but don't
Undo), then save the file as usual. Alternatively...

2- Open the file as above & use Save As to create a new file, then delete
the original.

Either way, from there on you'll be able to open the file by double-clicking
the document icon in a Finder window or on the desktop.
