Attachments don't open

I'm running Office XP Std V2002 on XP Pro - new
installation, with Symantec AT Corp 8.1. Attempting to
open attachments hangs Outlook - .doc, .xls, etc...

Editing Registry and adding Level1Remove -- .doc;.xls
(then rebooting) brings up the attachments to a save
dialog box, with no option to open.

If I then remove the string Level1Remove, I can open the
attachments -- until I reboot again. Then the problem
resumes.

I have the same setup on my laptop, with no problem with
attachments.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
