attachments in outlook arrive as .dat files. how can I stop this?

when I send file attachments in outlook (.jpg, .doc, etc) they arrive as .dat
files, which recipients can't open. How can i stop this?

Hal Hostetler [MVP P/I]

Change your default message format from Rich Text Format (RTF) to either
HTML or Plain Text. Rich Text is only understood by Outlook. In general
RTF should NEVER be used for Internet mail because it screws up EVERY other
email client out there; they'll either get a WINMAIL.DAT file or get no
attachment at all:
