I have a client that I am trying to troubleshoot an Outlook email issue
with. She has been having email problems for a while and today switched to
Speakeasy business class DSL with static IP and a Sonicwall TZ180 firewall.
The Sonicwall has been inline for about a month. About a month ago she
switched her email hosting to register.com [from mcleodusa] and is using
POP3 server of mail.yourdomainname.com and SMTP of webmail.register.com
using default ports of 110 and 25 with no SSL. Her computers are XP Pro SP2
and Microsoft Office 2007 SP1. I used MBSA to make sure all updates are
installed on each computer. Using Outlook with single POP3 account on each
computer, though she has a couple computers with her same email account [POP
leaves mail on server]. Computers are relatively new and clean with McAfee
Total Protection minus firewall. It would seem that Speakeasy would be the
blame but I could not determine for sure how long the attachment problem has
been happening.
Her email normally works great with Outlook as long as she is getting no or
small attachments. She gets a lot of Excel attachments. If they are say
under 70 kb they always come through. But larger ones say over 300 kb almost
never get delivered. I sent a lot of test emails today from one computer to
another and when one of her larger Excel atachments arive the progress bar
shows a relatively smooth and fast download until about 95 percent where it
hangs for 15 seconds or so and poof. Outlook shows error that says mail
server lost connection with ISP. The email never gets delievered and if you
try send/receive again it shows that there is nothing to be delivered.
Offhand I can not remember if it still is on the mail server or not by
trying to receive from another computer. I experienced that same behaviour
on 3 different computers including a new one that AV had not been installed
on yet as at first I was suspicious of AV possibly being a problem. Nothing
in the Event Viewer logs showed anything of interest.
Anyone have an idea what may be going on?? I called the ISP and register.com
and they both basically blamed the other and said the problem definitley was
not on their end. When I go back I am going to try putting one of her older
computers online to try Outlook 2003 and Outlook Express to see what
happens, try a different firewall, and try setting one computer to use
Outlook with her Speakeasy email account and email servers to see what
happens with the same attachments. Thanks for any help on this issue.
