Attempting to merge data, but it will not fall into columnar order

I have my phone book list in Office 2003 Excel, attempting to merge it into
columnar order in Word 2003. Data is all over the paper. Will not fall into
my columnar order.

Use a Directory type mailmerge main document with the merge fields in the
cells of a table in the main document.
