Greetings and good day to all. i'm finally ready to beg arround for
help after I threw in the towel on this matter at 5 am on a saturday.
i'm having a problem with the audio notes feature in word 2004. the
record button works fine and an audio file is being generated and can
be played back, but nothing can be heard as the input level slider is
stuck on zero and won't budge. i've uninstaled and reinstaled office
along with all the available updates. i've even plugged in a sterio
microphone thinking one might be needed. all to no avail! my system is
a G4 mac lap top 1.67 ghz with an ample 1.5 gb ddr SDRAM.not that i
suspect that has anything to do with it.windows website article on the
subject advises to click and slide. but it wouldn't.
I would apreciate any help or feed back from anyone who has encountered
such a problem. i'm much obliged

Hi Ray!
I'm not really sure if this solves your problem, but make sure to check your
system preferences. You're not stating which Mac OS version you're using, so
assuming it's Mac OS X 10.3.x: open System Preferences, and click on Sound.
You'll find three tabs, one of which is Input; that's the one you'll need.
Make sure the internal microphone is selected, and use the indicator below
to see if it registers any sound. Similarly, if you want to use your
microphone, you'll need to select the line in port. Use the slider below to
increase the input volume. Now launch Word and see if it's working. As I
said, I'm not sure if this solves your problem, but it's a very basic thing
to make sure that the microphone is working.

Michel you are a walking legend, you won't believe how long i was
stuck on my desk burning the proverbial midnight oil trying every
possiblity i could think of. yet here it was, under my nose. I am
humbeled and much obliged down on my knees bowing the i'm not worthy in
absentia. sorry, don't mean to blaber on but i've been fretting and
agonising obsessively about this for the last two days for i needed
this feature for a special lecture on monday. so many many heart felt
thanks.
ps. You won't happen to be aware of any dictation software for word
2004 or for mac alternatively, a software that would enable the
computer to write down what one dictated to it, would you?
many thanks again.

Hi Ray.
I'm glad I could help, especially since it's so deeply appreciated. To
answer your question: I've never used any dictation software, but two
applications that I can think of right now are ViaVoice and iListen (go to
www.versiontracker.com/macosx for download links). As far as I remember,
though, no one's ever said anything nice about dictation software on the
Mac, so don't expect too much. Anyway, I hope you'll impress your colleagues
with your functioning notebook layout view!
