audio recording

I do not have a microphone so can I use a digital tape recorder instead to
record my professor in class

Yes, but there is no way to index the external recording to the notes you
take. Since the recording is external to OneNote (and really - external to
the computer) there's no information that OneNote can use for this
indexing.

Microphones are cheap. Your computer should have a mic jack on it that
you could plug just about any standard mic into. You could probably find
a basic one at Radio Shack for under $10.

What kind of classroom is it that the environment is hostile to laptops?

Well, anyhow, you can record on a diigtal recorder and then copy that file
to your hard drive and create a link to it from within OneNote. You don't
get quite all of the OneNote audio features when you do that but since
you're not bringing your laptop you're not taking notes in OneNote during
the lecture anyhow.

I am in medical school and the classes are "hands on" and in this case my
hands are usually bloody and gross. Plus there are many chemicals in the lab
that may spill unto my lap top. Please advise me as to what I need to do to
create a link and which audio features would no longer be available to me?

Ah, yes, I see what you mean. Well, you could always use your digital
recorder, then copy the file that creates to a folder on your hard drive.
Then drag/drop that file from there into your OneNtoe folder -- it'll let
you create a link that file.

What you lose is that when you use OneNote to create audio recordings it
keeps track of what notes you're taking at the time and will highlight
those ("follow the bouncing ball").
