auto adjust height of cells

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) Processor: Intel Is there a way to have Excel automatically adjust the height of a cell depending on how much text is in it?

Not the height of a cell, but the height of a row. The height is adjusted
automatically when you increase or decrease font size on any cell in a row
assuming the row's height has not been manually adjusted.

To have the height of the row adjusted automatically based on volume of text
content you need to apply Format> Cells> Alignment - Wrap Text.

Thanks for your reply. I understand that the adjustment affects the height of a row, not a cell. I already have applied Format> Cells> Alignment - Wrap Text. However, my rows do not expand. Is that because I've manually adjusted them? If so, how can I have that action overriden by row height adjustment?

I think your conclusion about the manual adjustment is right on target :)

In order to reset the defaults select a cell in the row then use Format>
Row> AutoFit.

Thanks for your reply. I reset the defaults by selecting a cell in the rows; I then used Format>Row> AutoFit. This worked for unmerged cells. :)

However, this action did not affect groups of merged cells. I tried selecting each row of merged cells, then Format>Row> AutoFit –no luck. I tried selecting the columns of merged cells, then Format>Row> AutoFit –no luck. Wrap text is selected for merged cells. Can I get merged cells to obey autofit?

You can't get Merged Cells to obey *anything* :)

Seriously, merged cells arguably are the most abominable "feature" ever
written into the program. Anyone [except MS :)] would recommend that you
avoid them like the plague... At least in any working Excel file. If you
want to create a Form to be printed for hand-written or typed data
collection you may be able to get away with them, but other than that they
will -- invariably -- cause any degree of interference & problems...
Possibly resulting in corruption to the point that the file becomes
unusable.
